Helping Your Pet Settle In

Whew! The car or air travel is finished, and you’ve arrived at your destination. Here’s how to help your dog or cat settle in at your hotel.

Set up their space

Unpack your dog or cat’s items first. Set up a corner with their bed or carrier, blanket, toys and a fresh bowl of water. Set up the litter box for cats. The familiar items and scents of home can help reduce stress and make your pet feel safe.

Start small for cats

Cats often adjust best to a new place if introduced to it gradually. Consider setting up your cat’s space first in the bathroom so they can relax and adjust while enclosed in a small room. Once they’re comfortable, offer them the option to explore the larger room.

Get some exercise

Take time for some active play – a walk with your dog or a game with your cat. This helps them burn off excess energy and excitement from travel so they can settle down in their new space.

Stick around

Even if you’re eager to explore, spend time in your hotel room with your pet while they get comfortable. Leaving them alone before they have time to settle in can lead to anxiety and acting out.

Stay on schedule

Try to stick with your pet’s regular feeding routine so you don’t upset their schedule or their stomach. Being offered food when they usually expect it can help your pet feel like they’re at “home.”

Give love and praise

Talk with your pet and offer encouraging words as they settle in, to help them know they are in a safe place and that you’re by their side.

Keep their minds busy

Bring toys along to keep pets occupied in your hotel room. Consider puzzle toys and interactive options that are designed to entertain, exercise and stimulate pets’ minds.
