Tips on Signage Style and Voice

From advertising to phone alerts, we all see numerous communications everywhere we go. So how can you make signage about responsible pet ownership and pet guidelines stand out? Try these tips.

  • Use large, simple and bold fonts so information is easily readable from a distance.
  • Incorporate cute pet faces into your design to draw the eye.
  • Consider speaking in the voice of a pet as an added way to make your messages memorable.
  • Choose bright colors and make sure there’s good contrast between text and the background, for readability.
  • Say what you need to say in the fewest words possible, so it’s easy to take in at a glance.
  • Keep the design simple so there aren’t too many elements competing for attention.

Here’s a sample sign from the BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ program that demonstrates these tips.

A responsible pet ownership sign says: "Clean up. We're dogs. We can't do it ourselves. Please do your duty when we do ours." The sign is simple and bold and includes a cute puppy looking at the text.
