Sample Responsible Pet Ownership Messages

Beyond the basics of sharing where pets are allowed and any required guidelines, signage is a great opportunity to educate pet parents and reinforce the importance and benefits of responsible pet ownership.

Here are sample messages about responsible pet ownership topics that can be helpful in public spaces. They’re in the voice of a pet to help make them memorable.

  • LOVE THE LEASH: Use a leash to protect me, our surroundings and those we meet along the way.
  • NO NIBBLING: Don’t let me chew on plants or other things that could be harmful. Bring treats or toys instead.
  • CLEAN UP: I’m a dog. I can’t do it myself. Please do your duty and clean up when I do mine.
  • GIMME SPACE: Make sure I hang out where I’m safe and won’t be underfoot.
  • STAY WITH ME: If you leave me alone, I might get scared, distracted or lost. I’m happiest and safest with you.
  • KEEP WATCH: I try to be good, but remember that you’re in charge and responsible for my actions.
  • MANNERS MATTER: Be a responsible pet owner and make sure I’m well trained and comfortable in social situations.
  • TAKE A BREAK: If you’re tired, I probably am too. Rest and water breaks are good for people and pets.
  • GRRR YIP WOOF. If I’m telling you I’m over-excited, aggressive or anxious, please take me somewhere quiet where I can calm down.
