Oakland, CA

BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ certified cities have programs and policies that make it easier for pets and pet owners to live a happy, healthy life together.

What Makes Oakland a Pet-Friendly City?

Certified in the BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ program in 2019, Oakland, California scored especially well in the Shelters and Parks traits of our pet-friendly cities model.

The city says its most pet-friendly feature is the abundance of places that welcome pets. From restaurants, breweries and bars, to hiking trails and hotels, Oakland provides many opportunities for people and pets to enjoy the city together.

Plus, Oakland is part of the East Bay Regional Park District, where dogs are allowed off-leash in almost all open spaces and undeveloped areas of parklands.

We strive to make Oakland a better city for all of our inhabitants and are proud of the work we’ve done to rehome pets, encourage responsible pet ownership, and ensure pet-friendly businesses and green spaces. Oakland is a better city for and because of our pets and the people who care about them!”
