What to Pack for Traveling with Pets

Taking dogs and cats on trips means more quality time together and not having to worry about leaving them behind. But it’s no fun arriving and realizing you forgot a favorite toy or treat. Use this checklist to make sure you pack all the things you need.

The Basics

  • Collar with up-to-date ID tag
  • Leash, crate and/or carrier
  • Harness for safe car travel
  • Dog waste bags or litter box, litter and scoop
  • Puppy pads if needed

Food and Drinks

  • Food bowl
  • Pet food
  • Pet treats
  • Can opener, if needed
  • Water bowl
  • Extra bottles of water

Health Care

  • Any needed medications and prescription for refills
  • Proof of vaccination
  • Health certificate from your vet (if crossing state lines)
  • Copy of health records
  • Your vet’s contact info
  • Pet first aid kit

Cleaning Supplies

  • Paper towels
  • Pet-safe cleaner
  • Grooming tools
  • Pet-safe shampoo or pet wipes
  • Spare towels

Fun and Comfort

  • Favorite toys
  • Travel bed or blanket
  • Extra throw or blanket – this can help protect furniture too
  • Booties for hot pavement or sweater for cold days

Just in Case

  • Carry a photo of you and your pet. If you get separated, it will help with the search and be proof of ownership.
  • Be sure your pet is microchipped and registered. Carry a copy of the chip number and the name of the registry with you as you travel.
  • Consider a pet emergency card to alert authorities that you have a pet waiting – you can write where you’re staying on the card. Download here: bit.ly/PetEmergencyCards
