Sample Trail Messages

Pet-friendly trails are a wonderful opportunity for pets and pet owners to exercise together and meet others from the area. Signage near trails can help educate pet parents about how to keep the trail safe and healthy for everyone.

Here are sample responsible pet ownership messages that can be used in trail signage. They’re in the voice of a pet to help make them memorable.

  • EXPLORE TOGETHER: One of the greatest gifts we get is happy, healthy times together.
  • LOVE THE LEASH: Use a leash to protect me, our surroundings and those we meet along the way.
  • RESPECT THE PATH: Pick up after me for those who will follow in our footsteps. I’m a dog. I can’t do it myself.
  • GIMME A BREAK: Dogs need more water than people do. Carry water and plan breaks to keep me happy and healthy.
  • NO NIBBLING: Don’t let me chew on plants that could be harmful. Bring treats instead.
  • STAY WITH ME: If you leave me alone, I might get scared, distracted or lost. I’m happiest and safest with you.
  • STAY ON TRACK: Keep us on approved paths so we’re safe, don’t get lost and don’t ruin the trail for others.
  • MAKE NEW FRIENDS: But approach other pets with care until we know how the meeting will go.
  • GET FIT: Exercising with me helps strengthen our bond and helps us both stay healthy.
