What Makes Port St. Lucie a Pet-Friendly City?
Certified in the BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ program in 2019, Port St. Lucie, FL scored especially well in the Homes and Parks traits of our pet-friendly cities model.
The city boasts 62 pet waste stations throughout the community, which can be found on an interactive map for residents and visitors.
The community also has four dog parks and six additional parks that welcome leashed dogs.
Building for People and Pets
Here’s what then-Mayor Gregory J. Oravec said about pets when Port St. Lucie was certified as pet-friendly in 2019:
“We’re building something special in Port St. Lucie by working hard, smart and together on a strategic blueprint for the future of our community, which envisions a safe, beautiful and prosperous city for all people. It wouldn’t be a stretch to modify this adopted vision statement to read “a safe, beautiful and prosperous city for all people and pets” because in Port St. Lucie we love our pets, and our dogs and cats, in particular, hold a special place in our hearts. Too many of our citizens, dogs, and cats aren’t necessarily pets at all. They’re family. And, at City Hall, we feel the same way and are dedicated to helping our families, four-legged family members included, live better lives. Accordingly, we are striving to grow and enhance the pet-related services of our already pet-friendly city. Later this year, we will open our second dog park in two years, and our Animal Control Division will propose updated codes to better protect our pets. These are just a couple of highlights; and we are very excited about the opportunity to partner with organizations, like Mars Petcare and the US Conference of Mayors, and our citizens to make Port St. Lucie an even more welcoming place for people and pets to live, work and play together.“
