BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ certified cities have programs and policies that make it easier for pets and pet owners to live a happy, healthy life together.
Certified in the BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ program in 2019, Port St. Lucie, Florida, scored especially well in the Homes and Parks traits of our pet-friendly cities model.
There are 62 pet waste stations located throughout Port St. Lucie, making it easy for dog-owners to be out with their best friends. The city also has two leash-free dog parks and plans to open a third soon and a fourth in 2020. Port St. Lucie also has six parks that welcome on-leash dogs.
“We’re building something special in Port St. Lucie by working hard, smart and together on a strategic blueprint for the future of our community, which envisions a safe, beautiful and prosperous city for all people. It wouldn’t be a stretch to modify this adopted vision statement to read ‘a safe, beautiful and prosperous city for all people and pets’ because in Port St. Lucie we love our pets, and our dogs and cats, in particular, hold a special place in our hearts.
“To many of our citizens, dogs and cats aren’t necessarily pets at all. They’re family. And, at City Hall, we feel the same way and are dedicated to helping our families, four-legged family members included, live better lives. Accordingly, we are striving to grow and enhance the pet-related services of our already pet-friendly city. Later this year, we will open our second dog park in two years, and our Animal Control Division will propose updated codes to better protect our pets.
“These are just a couple of highlights; and we are very excited about the opportunity to partner with organizations, like Mars Petcare and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and our citizens, to make Port St. Lucie an even more welcoming place for people and pets to live, work and play together.”
– Mayor Gregory J. Oravec
