Independence, IA

BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ certified cities have programs and policies that make it easier for pets and pet owners to live a happy, healthy life together. Certified in the BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ program in 2021, Independence, IA scored especially well in the Shelters trait of our pet-friendly cities model.

Among other pet-friendly features, Independence boasts the Indee Bark Park, a safe, fun environment where dogs can play, socialize, exercise and train off-leash and where the city can promote responsible dog ownership. Along with other events, the park hosts fun and interactive dog dog behavior and training classes with a professional dog trainer.

The ground for the park was donated by the city and all of the expenses for building the park were (and continue to be) donated funds by citizens.

Each year the committee adds new features and improvements to the park with the donated funds. The yearly permits and day passes for use of the park are a large contributor to these funds.

The city of Independence is also currently expanding its walking trails, which it sees as an important benefit for people who want to get out with their pets and enjoy nature.

Independence’s Mayor on Earning Certification

“Independence is honored to be selected as a BETTER CITIES FOR PETS Certified City. We are pleased that our INDEE BARK PARK Citizen Committee is being recognized for their efforts in creating a safe and beautiful area for our pets to go for exercise and interaction with other pets. We as a community understand how important a part our city’s pets play in both the health and socialization of people. They open many doors for both socializing and exercising for our citizens for which we are deeply grateful for. We will continue to be proud supporters of our INDEE BARK PARK and all other efforts to create safe environments for our furry citizens!”
