What Makes Fort Wayne a Pet-Friendly City?
Certified in the BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ program in 2019, Fort Wayne, Indiana, scored particularly well on the Shelters trait of our pet-friendly cities model.
Fort Wayne is also a BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ grant recipient. The city received a grant in 2022 to provide community education about pet body language and behavior to reduce dog and other bites and, as a result, also reduce pet surrenders.
Programs for Pets and People
The city is very committed to being pet-friendly for its residents, and has a program to educate kids about pets. In addition, Fort Wayne reports that among its highlights are many pet-friendly events. From dog-friendly 5k races, to pet costume contests, to wiener dog races and grooming events, there’s something for every pet lover!
The city even hosts a swim for dogs in public pools before they close for the summer. Says a city spokesperson, “Fort Wayne is growing rapidly and we’re excited this growth is including our pets!”
