Mission, TX

BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ certified cities have programs and policies that make it easier for pets and pet owners to live a happy, healthy life together.

What Makes Mission a Pet-Friendly City?

Certified in the BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ program in 2021, Mission, TX scored especially well in the Homes and Parks traits of our pet-friendly cities model.

Mission is also a BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ grant recipient. The city received a grant in 2022 to create a pet deposit assistance program for individuals in need to help reduce housing-related separation of people and their pets.

Celebrating Pets and Pet People

The city held an event for community members and their pets at a local dog park to celebrate its certification.

Mission has 25 parks that welcome on-leash pets, and two dog parks where dogs can roam freely. The city has also said it aims to designate more off-leash green space in the future.

The city works to help pets find homes, listing adoptable pets on its website. It has also challenged local businesses to make pets welcome in order to make the community even more pet friendly.

Mission’s Mayor on Pet-Friendly Certification

“This is a huge honor and it is confirmation that we are doing great things here. I am proud to see that the dedication of our animal control department, our pet friendly residents and our community partners has been acknowledged on a nationwide platform through this program. The City of Mission is committed to continuing to build a community that offers its citizens and their pets an excellent quality of life.”

– Mayor Dr. Armando O’Caña
