2018 BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ Grants and Donations

Pets make our communities safer, our economies stronger and keep us connected. That’s why we’re so excited that cities across the U.S. are joining the movement to make life better for people and pets.

In June 2018, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) and Mars Petcare announced the recipients of the first BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ grants at the USCM annual meeting.

The grant program is a result of Mars Petcare and USCM’s ongoing partnership to raise awareness of the need for more pet-friendly places and policies. When surveyed, 82% of U.S. mayors agreed that pets make cities better.

The grant recipients were chosen from a field of nearly 50 applications outlining many innovative proposals designed to make communities more pet-friendly. While there weren’t grants available for every applicant, the sheer volume of interest was incredibly inspiring.

As a result, we decided to further Mars Petcare’s support with a $1 million donation of NUTRO™ pet food across the country.

Here’s a look at the grant recipients

Large City Winner: Ft. Worth, Texas, which will implement “Pets for Life,” a national program that provides pet wellness resources to residents in under-served communities. Funds will support free services such as vaccinations, spay/neuter, micro-chipping, and responsible pet ownership education.

Medium City Winner: Richmond, Virginia, which will work with Pet Partners to increase much-needed therapy animal teams in the area. These teams are critical for improving mental health and well-being through programs like hospital visits and support for children’s literacy.

Small City Winner: Hallandale Beach, Florida, which will establish a Responsible Pet Ownership campaign. When people are prepared for pet ownership and understand how to integrate them into their homes, fewer pets are lost or surrendered, which alleviates stress on animal welfare organizations.
